In the world of Burnaby Central Athletics, there have been some truly exciting wins and triumphant moments in the Fall 2017 season.

Volleyball-- The Grade 9 Girls Volleyball team had a very strong start with an outstanding record of 7 wins and 0 losses in league play. In addition, the team went undefeated in their first tournament, Volleyfest at Harry Jerome Sports Center, capturing the tournament title. The highlight of Volleyfest was a hard-fought semi-final win against a very talented Earl Marriot team. The team was able to capture the BNWSSAA District Banner and go on to win the Vancouver and District Championship. This earned them a spot in the Juvenile Provincials. The coaches want to recognize the whole team for their outstanding efforts at practices and in games, their accomplishments, and their great sense of fun! Central’s Bantam Girls Volleyball team finished at the top of the North Division and were able to win the District Banner after upsetting Moscrop on October 30. The Senior Girls Volleyball team sat in third place in the always competitive BNWSSAA league. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for Lower Mainland Tournament finals, which took place at Burnaby Central on November 16-18. Our Senior Boys team also made the Burnaby Final.

Rugby-- The Grade 9 Rugby Team started off their season on a great foot. In their first three 7 aside jamborees, they had a combined record of 6 wins and 4 losses. Their wins came over McRoberts (2), Tupper A/B (2) and Prince of Wales (losses were against Point Grey and McMath (2)). The coaches want to recognize the whole team for improving each week. The Grade 8 Boys Rugby has also had a great start to their season. They defeated Burnaby South and Moscrop by very large margins. Even with the lopsided scores, the team was able to play an excellent style of rugby by winning the breakdowns and using team passing to score. We just may see one of these boys put on a Canada jersey in the future and represent our country just like Current Team Canada member and former Central Rugby player, Admir Cejvanovic.

Cross Country-- The Central Cross Country teams are in excellent shape. Our remarkable Junior Girls team moved up to the Senior team, and combined with our three seniors, they captured the league and zone championships at Garry Point Park. Beating Provincial Champion McMath for first place was a huge upset. Ashlynne Stairs led the girls with a second place finish overall. The Senior Boys team has been strong all season with 11 runners. Led by Charles Yu’s sixth place overall finish at the league and zone championships, the team finished second. Our Junior Boys will be represented at Provincials by Tyler Chai and Quinn O’Shea.

Soccer-- The Junior Soccer team finished 5th in a very competitive BNWSSAA league and won their quarter final match against Burnaby North in an exciting shootout. Unfortunately, the team lost in the district final. The Senior Soccer team continued their winning ways by securing top spot in the league with a record of 8-0 and a goal differential of +27. After winning the district banner, the team earned a berth to the Provincial Championships on November 22-24.

Other teams that performed this season are the Swim Team who were able to place 7 participants in the Swimming Provincials and the Girls Field Hockey team, which had to cut their season short due to lack of girls. Hopefully there will be more girls interested next year. Soon our Basketball and Wrestling teams will begin their season.
